Our Mission

The Free High School for Adults opened in 2002 to provide the highest quality secondary education and a government-certified diploma to under-served adolescents and adults, rural and urban, excluded from the regular high schools. Over a thousand proud graduates are improving their own lives and the lives of their family members, and changing the culture and the economy of the entire region.

The Free Bus Ride

This touching and exciting video shows one rural group taking the free bus to the Campus. The bus driver starts in the dark, driving to the farthest point, Ostional, returning to the Campus in daylight. The students walk to the stop from their villages, often hiking kilometers, often in the dark, and in the rainy season, sometimes wading through flooded streams.

This group was getting an extra day of classes in English, computer use. and social values,  offered to 210 rural students in 2019. Graham Young and his organization, HOLA, of Virginia Beach, financed the first year of this bilingual program. The Free High School will be the first in the city to offer a certified bilingual diploma.

Getting an early start: Rural students wake early to walk to the free bus.
